The city is enjoying a spike in interest from the development sector with several very large projects recently approved that will revitalise our tourist precinct with strong investment leading to jobs for our residents. Locally in Division 1, strong growth continues as we endeavour to keep pace with the necessary infrastructure to support the growing population.
Ormeau Lions has just concluded another excellent Ormeau Fair. This is a special day on our calendar each year - this year slightly later and on the Father's Day weekend, but incredibly well supported and enjoyed by all. Lions also continue to look after bookings for the Pimpama Hall and you will always see them each week outside the IGA where it's impossible to escape the aroma of sausage and egg sandwiches. The Club is welcomes new members, so call by and sign up if you'd like to become involved.
Satellite Rotary Club Northern Gold Coast
It's encouraging to see Rotary spreading into the Ormeau area and willingly offering to assist with community projects. Due to the Districts, the new club will be a satellite of Beenleigh Rotary and it is hoped will meet on the second Monday of each month at the Ormeau Centre. Please contact me should you be interested in joining this new group.
Exit 54 and The Coomera Town Centre
Work is underway at Exit 54 and so far, the roadwork has not caused too much additional grief for drivers. Westfield, the State Government and the Federal Government have all made contributions to the upgrade of the road network and we anxiously await the development of the Coomera Town Centre. Council last year approved the development plans for approximately 90,000m2 of retail space but this was conditioned by the State Government to a limit of 20,000m2 pending the upgrade of Exit 54. Now that works are underway, we hope to soon see the sod turn which will earmark our major northern Town Centre which will have an expected retail catchment of about 160,000 people by 2026.
2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games
Work is going to schedule in preparation for the 2018 Gold Coast Games. The Village is on track, as is our wonderful Coomera Sports Indoor Stadium. Fantastic to see Yatala Company All Type Welding as the contractor for this project. Congratulations Peter Jakubenko (and his seven sons who are all working in the business).
The construction of Stage 2 of the light rail is the thing we'd most like to deliver in time for the Commonwealth Games. Stage 1 has been an outstanding success and Council has now committed $55m towards Stage 2. We just need the State and Federal Government to now sort out their funding - and go to tender for Stage 2 so that we can deliver in advance of our Games.
