COOMERA TOWN CENTRE

The State Government and Gold Coast City Council have been in discussions with Westfield and Queensland Investment Corporation to decide the responsibility for road upgrades and infrastructure charges applicable to development of the Coomera Town Centre. In an attempt to encourage development, Council has imposed a 12 months currency period for the agreed charges which are significantly lower than previously published suggestions. Operational works are underway for the first residential dwellings east of the Town Centre and approvals are in place for the industrial sector at the northern point of the Town Centre. We hope that the necessary master plans will now be lodged and that development will proceed because the area has waited long enough. Council is still pursuing appropriate parcels of land for the Council facilities and civic presence that we need within the Town Centre. The Coomera Town Centre will be an integrated transit oriented development, with a true heart, shops, restaurants, entertainment precinct, medical and other services with an expected retail catchment of about 160,000 people by 2026. .

2018 GOLD COAST COMMONWEALTH GAMES

The Premier, Hon Anna Bligh MP was the guest speaker at the Christmas 2011 Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce Breakfast. I was fortunate to be able to put a question to the Premier about the prospect of developing additional Games venues in northern Gold Coast. Unfortunately, the Premier's response indicated that the Bid Book was the "guiding document" and the basis of our successful bid and that a change to the venues already outlined was therefore unlikely. It makes sense that the buildings and sporting venues are developed where there is an identified need and where they will provide the greatest legacy for residents at the conclusion of the Games. More than 50% of the city's population will live in the Northern Growth Corridor by 2021 and it's interesting that several elected representatives and mayoral candidates have since contacted me - to offer their support to work with me in continuing to lobby to attract new faciltiies in this region.

LIGHT RAIL

The commencement of works on the first stage of our light rail system also prompted me to write to the Transport Minister, Hon Rachel Nolan, with regard to further extensions to the light rail network. Coomera will be our third Key Regional Centre along with Robina and Southport and I hope to one day see connection provided to serve the needs of northern residents.
